New traffic flashers will help students, pedestrians more safely cross near Monclova Primary
(LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio) – The Lucas County Engineer's Office completed installation of new rectangular rapid flashing beacons with new high visibility crosswalk signs for two crosswalks in the Monclova Primary School zone. These devices are activated by a crosswalk button on each side of the road, which initiate flashing lights below the signs, alerting drivers to stop and yield the right of way for pedestrians to safely cross the roadway.
The first new addition is located at the corner of Monclova Road and Waterville Monclova Road while the second is nearby at the Wabash Cannonball Trail crossing on Waterville Monclova Road. The estimated cost of the project was $77,465. There are now seven rectangular rapid flashing beacons in school zones on Lucas County roads, as seen here.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit focused on keeping kids safe from injuries and which tracks pedestrian and traffic safety among children and teens, there were 385 fatal injuries and over 9,000 non-fatal injuries among children 0-19 in 2021.
School zone signs alert and educate drivers within the school zone and are the first line of defense.
Rapid flashing rectangular beacons, installed in unsignalized crosswalks, alert motorists to pedestrians who have manually activated the beacon and go a step further than basic speed limit and school crossing signs.
"We obtained ODOT safety grant funds that funded this meaningful project near Monclova Elementary School," LCEO Deputy Engineer Michael Stormer said. "The Lucas County Engineer's Office recognizes that engineering and traffic-calming measures play a large role in keeping children safe near school zones and crosswalks. Whenever we can enhance safety, it's worth it."
Anthony Wayne Local Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Fritz welcomed the new safety features and the shared cooperation with LCEO in coming up with new ways to enhance the safety of the students and community.
"Ensuring the safety of our students is a top priority at Anthony Wayne Local Schools. The addition of these new traffic enhancements at crosswalks within our District provide an extra level of protection for the children, families and residents in our District," said Dr. Fritz said. "We are grateful to the Lucas County Engineer's Office for installing these new devices to underscore a shared commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of the pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in our community."
