In February 2023, the Lucas County Engineer’s Office was selected, in partnership with Wood, Ottawa and Sandusky counties, as one of 510 recipients nationwide for a $400,000 grant as part of the new federal Safe Streets and Roads for All Program (SS4A). This grant will allow for all agencies involved to study and develop an Action plan with projects that if implemented, would greatly improve safety, efficiency and equity in their areas.

UPDATE 9/5/24

After a year of work crafting a regional transportation safety action plan through a strict review process that was both data-driven and based on feedback from the public, our office along with the rest of Lucas, Wood, Ottawa and Sandusky counties applied for an implementation grant to go toward our action plan and the USDOT awarded our application $24.5 million.

UPDATE 5/13/24

Thank you for all of your input. After careful collection of traffic data, analysis and recommendations from our four county engineers and various other transportation officials and community advocates, the final plan below addresses the most problematic parts of our transportation system with proposed projects that are proven to help reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. The dashboard takes a look at fatal and serious crash data across the four-county network through the lens of different filters such as speeding, alcohol, vulnerable users, type of vehicle and more.

Lucas County Engineer Mike Pniewski stopped by WTOL 11 News at 4 to talk about the Transportation Safety Action Plan in development, 2024 road projects and more

Update 12/28/23

The Lucas County Engineer’s Office is holding four meetings to allow the public to attend and provide their input on the Northwest Ohio Traffic Safety Plan.

LCEO has been collecting public input online, however, some people have made it known that they haven’t been able to figure out how to submit their feedback online. So, four in-person meetings have been set up to help with this problem.

Update 12/15/23

The Transportation Safety Action Plan advisory group, made of up officials from Lucas, Wood, Sandusky and Ottawa counties met at Pearson Metropark to continue discussions on crafting a regional safety action plan.

This plan is based on data analysis and expertise from each county's engineer and community with the goal of identifying the most deadly and problematic roadways and intersections and coming up with sensible solutions to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.
