Garden and Albon Road roundabout opens as Hill and Centennial project begins
(LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio) – The newest roundabout in Lucas County officially opened to the public Monday. Located at Garden Road and Albon Road in Springfield Township, crews with Geddis Paving and Excavating Inc. were able to finish up final tasks late Monday night to open the intersection slightly early before Tuesday's anticipated reopening.
The project kicked off back on April 22 and finished in 49 days. April was the third rainiest on record in the Toledo area and May was also a wet month. Yet, Geddis crews were still able to finish in a timely fashion despite the weather disruptions to work. "We are pleased to announce the completion of our first roundabout project of 2024 at the intersection of Garden and Albon Roads," Lucas County Engineer Mike Pniewski said. "Thanks to our contractors, inspectors and all of our team who finished this project on time despite some challenging weather conditions." |

"As always, our priority is to build projects that enhance the safety of the public. As our 29th roundabout intersection improvement, we will continue to see progress in terms of lives saved and severe injuries avoided, while improving traffic flow in Lucas County."
As the first project was completed, the second of our four roundabout projects this season started Monday, June 10, at Hill Ave and Centennial Road. This closure will last 45 days and should be completed just as our biggest roundabout project is set to start at Bancroft Street and McCord Road July 22.
"We are pleased to announce the anticipated start of the largest of our four intersection improvement projects this year,Z" Pniewski said, "which will enhance public safety while at the same time, better manage traffic conditions."
The LCEO is committed to working with our community, residents and businesses near our project zones every season to ensure ease of access and safety during work.
"It is important to note that the projects are constructed in a way that continues to maintain access to those homes," Pnieski added, "and especially businesses in the immediate vicinity of the improvements with the goal of minimum disruption to their operations.
"We encourage the public to continue to utilize the roadways and to keep our business community strong and vibrant."
Businesses located at the intersection of Bancroft and McCord Road, which include Speedy Clean Laundromat and Car Wash, TJ Mart and Glass Dreams will be open and continue to have access throughout the entire project. Other popular businesses located nearby like Mr. Freeze and GLCAP Bancroft Early Childhood Center on McCord will also still be open and accessible.
Other projects include a fourth roundabout in conjunction with Monclova Township, located at Salisbury Road and Holloway Road, which will also start in July. An official start date is still to be determined.
Work zone safety and the safety of our workers is our top priority. Please slow down and be extra vigilant this summer when driving near our work zones on your way home or visiting businesses.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 4,101 work zone-related crashes in Ohio last year, including eight fatal crashes, and 100 serious injury crashes.
“Each year, crews work on our roadways to make them safer and last longer,” Pniewski added. “We ask the public to please slow down and provide plenty of space for our workers so that they can return home to their families each and every day.
“Being patient now results in better, longer lasting roads we can all use.”
Plan ahead and know your route ahead of time, be aware of any work zones and avoid if possible. Pay attention to your surroundings (signs, workers) and avoid distractions (using your phone, eating, drinking, etc.). Slow down when approaching a work zone and give workers plenty of space.
